PIPE CRADLES-What is a Pipe Cradle
Cradles are designed and engineered for pipeline contractors to assist in line travel operations and safely laying or lowering of pipeline on the surface and into pipe trenches. The main features of Cradles are a heavy duty Crane lifting lug welded to heavy gauge pipe assembly called a Head Iron. The Rollers, polyurethane or other suitable polymers, are strung on wire rope loops and hung on the Head Iron. Pipes to be lowered or laid are passed through the loops and rolled forward. SINGLE HEAD IRON PIPE CRADLE
Single Head Iron
The assembly comprising heavy duty crane lifting lug and pipe with slots for holding wire rope slings with rollers is called a Head Iron. Head Irons are designed and manufactured to accomodate different diameters of line pipe from 4 inches to upwards of 80 inches and weighing between 1 ton and 50 tons. Head Iron design changes as the diameter and weight of the pipe changes. Head Irons used for pipes upto 24 inch in diameter and weighing 5-10 tons are known as Single Head Iron ( illustrated above ). Single Head Iron comprises of a crane lug welded to a single piece of pipe with slots at both ends to receive wire rope slings with rollers. There is always a single wire rope sling looped around the pipe to form a double loop.
DOUBLE HEAD IRON CRADLE
Double Head Iron
Double Head Iron is used when pipe diameters and weights increase and cannot be accomodated on a single head iron pipe cradle. Double Head Iron is essentially similar in design and construction to a single head iron with the difference of two parrallel pipes instead of a single pipe. The Crane lifting lug is positioned in the middle of the two pipes and connected and welded to both pipes.
