HIGH SHEAR MIXING IMPELLER-The Cowles Saw blade design of this impeller provides mixing by generating high shear levels. The Cowles Saw blade is suggested for use in wetting out powders, dispersing fine solids, breaking up agglomerations (clumps) and creating emulsions. Mixing technology represents a balance between the requirements of the process and the output efficiency of the impeller within the process. Often referred to as propellers, the impellers selected for a specific agitation system are required to produce one of three basic fluid regimes: Flow (Q), Shear (H) and Pressure (P); and there is also the possibility of producing a combination of the three.

IMPORTANT GENERAL GUIDELINES
1. Always read these instructions in full as well as any other information and manuals provided with the equipment, before operating the mixer.
2. Check and ensure that the mixer is securely fixed to the floor or other holding base such as the wall for wall mounted units. Mixers operate at high speed and use large amounts of power. Machinery that is not properly fixed to a firm base is a dangerous operating environment.
3. Check that any mixing drums, pots or tanks are secure or with locking wheels firmly locked.
4. Electricity can be hazardous and must always be used with great care.
5. Electricity and water make a dangerous combination, so always keep electrical equipment away from rain and water.
6. Check and ensure all the electrical connections and cables are well connected and that there are no lose wires or loosely placed cables. All cables are to be held firmly in place in truncking or suitable brackets with cable ties.
7. The action of this mixer can cause injury or damage if the machine is not used in a careful and controlled way.
8. If you have not used mixer before, familiarize yourself with how the mixer works before you start on the main task.
9. Plan your work and think ahead to make sure you will always be working safely.
10. You must have the prescribed items of personal protective equipment.
11. Mixers must not be used by minors, or by anyone under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
12. This mixer is designed for operation by an able bodied adult. Anyone with either temporary or permanent disability must seek expert advice before using any mixer.
13. Do not use the mixer where there is a danger of explosion. It will ignite fumes from petrol, or gas cylinders, or solvent vapours in the air.
14. The mixer may have been fitted with a flame-proof motor and thus be prepared for operation in a solvent processing plant. If you are working with solvents, only operate the mixer after you have verified that the motor and panel are correct for safe operation with solvents.
15. Make sure that the area is clear and safe and that no one is near to you or could distract you.
16. Protect other people from the noise and other chemicals or dust. Warn others to keep away.
Before starting work
A. WORK AREA
17. Ensure that you have put on the prescribed personal protective equipment (PPE) for your plant. Eye goggles and safety shoes are the normal minimum requirement.
18. Anybody who is working near you must also wear the prescribed personal protective equipment for your plant.
19. Never wear loose clothing, jewelry, or hairstyles that may get caught in mixer.
20. Do not put your hand or anything else than the mix into the drum, or tank, while it is rotating.
21. The rotation of the mixer is slow but very powerful. It will not stop rotating until the power is switched off. Keep your hands out of the way.
22. Always unplug the mixer before cleaning, disassembling or reassembling.
23. Never enter a tank until the mixer is completely locked out in the motor control center (MCC), or central electrical control panel. A second person must always be present to assist in case of an emergency. The tank must be checked for adequate air by extensive air flushing of the tank before anyone enters. The person entering the tank must always have a rope around them and the rope routed to the outside for emergency extraction.
24. Never bypass safety mechanisms or guards. They are there for the operator’s protection.
25. Do not move the mixer while the drum, pot or tank is full (mobile units).
26. Do not move the mixer while it is still connected to the power supply.
27. Take care not to accidentally pull the plug from the socket.
28. If you think the cable may be cut or damaged in anyway, switch off and unplug at the mains before inspecting it. If the cable attached to the mixer is damaged, stop using the machine. Contact your maintenance contractor.
29. Switch off (and remove the plug from the socket with mobile units) before leaving the mixer unattended.
30. If your equipment does not work properly, do not attempt to repair it. Check with your maintenance contractor. If the problem still persists, and the cause is not immediately identifiable, consult with Jones Industrial Mixers for guidance on further checkpoints and if necessary on site-assistance.
31. Clean your mixer and drum, pot or tank with mops and suitable rags. Do not commence cleaning until the mixer is switched off. Do not spray with water on top of drums, pots or tanks or the mixers themselves, this can cause water to enter motors, other electrical or control equipment. Clean promptly after the batch is finished according to your plant procedures.
C. DISPERSION MIXING IMPELLERS BLADES MIXER OPERATION – START UP
32. Do not run the mixer without any liquid or without any other product in the unit. This is not only hazardous but can cause damage to the mixer itself. Product serves to stabilize the impeller by acting as a dampening medium.
33. Before starting the mixer check that the blade has been correctly fitted and note the rotational marking on the blade, if so marked. It will be important to check that the indicated blade rotation matches the actual mixer shaft direction of rotation when the mixer is started.
34. When first commissioning the mixer, check that the unit operates with a clockwise rotation (normal), or as otherwise specified in the mixer instructions, by briefly switching on the mixer and then immediately switching the mixer off. Stand well clear of the mixer when doing this evaluation.
35. In the event of any unusual sounds or unusual behaviour of the mixer, check with your maintenance contractor that all bolts are tight and that all belts are tensioned correctly. Dislocation or loosening of bolts is possible during installation or other unforeseen handling or processing event.
If the noise still persists, and the cause is not immediately identifiable, consult with Jones Industrial Mixers for guidance on further checkpoints and if necessary on site-assistance.
D. MIXER OPERATION – ONGOING
36. Mixers must always only be started when there is enough liquid added in the drum, pot of tank to cover the impeller and one half impeller diameter minimum above the impeller surface.
37. Do not start the mixer above the liquid and then suddenly lower the mixer into the liquid in the pot or tank below. This will cause great stress on the mixer unit and result in rapid mixer failure.
38. Do not shake mixer rams in the event of the ram not rising and the machine thus not lifting. Such behaviour results invariably from inadequate hydraulic oil in the oil tank, which in turn usually stems from hydraulic pipe leaks. The correct action is to find the source of the leak, repair same, top up the oil tank with the correct oil and bleed any air from the ram top. We recommend that you contact Jones Industrial Mixers to carry out this service.
39. Regularly check the hydraulic Oil level in the oil tank. Top up with the correct oil grade, which you must source from Jones Industrial Mixers.
40. Exercise regular maintenance of your mixer. Grease nipples must be periodically greased, belts checked and all components maintained in good condition.
41. Replace blades or impellers after nor more than one third wear in thickness and no more than seven percent in diameter.
42. Replace wear components such as wipers as soon as wiping is not taking place
